2018 LAFMA CARP & TILAPIA ERADICATION COMPETITION RESULTS

3/26/2018

The first time in a while we had a glorious day for our Comp, with light winds and for the most bright sunshine. On arriving at the Dam early Saturday morning the overnight crew had set up the gazebos, BBQ, table and chairs for the event. Registration started early with boat fishermen registering way before 6 am and by the 7 am Start fishing time we had 150 registrations. Through out the day we continued to receive registrations from people who had decided to have a late start and we ended having a total of 228 entries in this years event!

Of the total entries 170 were Seniors and 58 were Juniors and as a total they managed to catch 2190 Fish consisting of 2109 Tilapia and 81 Carp. Of those fish 498 were weighed in by Juniors.

Largest Carp in the Seniors Division went to Ben Thomas at 2.49 kg and the largest total caught of 9 going to Ben Thomas as well.

Largest Tilapia in the Seniors Division went to Adrian Wilson with 2.265 kg and the largest total caught of 166 went to Rachel Davies

Largest Carp in the Juniors Division went to Summer Hopper at 1.73 kg and the largest total caught of 3 going to Fin Bower

Largest Tilapia in the Juniors Division went to Noah Schipplock with a very impressive 2.075 kg and the largest total caught went to Zac Farmer with 97.

The Lucky Draw Prize from our Major Sponsor Dragon Kayaks, a Dragon Slayer was won by Tristan Falkenhagen

With the larger numbers attending this year we have managed to raise approx $4500 for stocking of our Native fish into the Dam. An outstanding result considering we took near 2200 pest fish from the dam. The dam has been fishing well of late with the native species of Australian Bass and Mary River Cod and these monies will be used to further stock the dam with these fish.

Overall a great event, every Junior went home with a prize if they caught fish or not. We can do this each year as we have sponsors that help us with donations and prizes generously, without our sponsors we could not hold this event each year and to that LAFMA thanks you. Thank you to all the members, volunteers and competitors and we will see you all next year in 2019.

Trolling for Bass this week, kayak Angler Christopher Thompson caught a huge Tilapia at the dam. This beast was 46.5 cm long, as per Fisheries Policy this was not returned to the water and was humanely disposed of back at the Ramp.

Angler Chris Gagel fishing for Bass this week at the Dam caught a by catch. A beautiful green fish, a Mary River Cod. These have been stocked in the dam in the past years and they are starting to be caught regularly with three or four catches reported in the last few weeks.

Chris was trolling off the bank where the drop off is into the Teviot Brook creek bed, using a gold orange lure that trolls to a depth of three meters.

As Mary River Cod are totally protected in this dam and are a no take species, Chris took a quick picture and released it.

That's an early Christmas Surprise, thanks for the pictures Chris.

2017 Carp/Tilapia Eradication Competition - Results

3/21/2017

Another year and another successful Carp Busting event behind us. A couple of quick stats:

In spite of dire warnings of rain of "Biblical " proportions the weather was kind to us and no animals were seen travelling two by two. Unfortunately, these weather predictions saw attendance down from 2016 but the catch was impressive nonetheless.

A total of 154 competitors managed to extract an impressive 1583 Tilapia and 28 Carp. It's pretty evident that the dam is filling up with jellybean size Tilapia which should make for many a tasty snack for the introduced Bass And Mary River Cod.

Largest Carp in the Seniors Division went to Carl Thomas at 6.9 kg and the largest total of 8 going to Peter Thomas.

Largest Tilapia in the Seniors Division went to Fred Snyder with 2.53 kg and the largest total of 176 went to Todd Rasmussen.

Largest Carp in the Juniors Division went to Billy Alford at 1.69kg and he shared the largest total with Luke Windolf.

Largest Tilapia in the Juniors Division went to Lleyton Neibling with a very impressive 1.61 kg and the largest total went to Riley Reick with .....wait for it..... 208. He seemed a bit young to be using Gelignite but keep it up young man. Love your work!

Even with numbers being down from last year, we raised $2570 from entries to buy fingerlings which will go toward making a longer term, more sustainable fishery that can be nothing but good news for the district and the anglers of SEQ.

Good work and Thank You to all competitors, sponsors and members for all your efforts in cleaning out a total of 1611 pest fish.
Onward and upward with a more successful event in 2018
